First Finnish movie to Premiere on the opening weekend of the Sundance Film Festival!

A young girl Tinja tries to fulfill her demanding mother’s dream by succeeding in rack gymnastics. Tinja’s mother introduces the world to her talented daughter and her idyllic happy family life in her popular video blog. One night Tinja finds a strange bird egg. She hides the egg in her room and secretly incubates it under his blanket until something hatches from the egg that upsets them all.

Hatching is a psychological horror drama directed by Hanna Bergholm and written by Ilja Rautsi. It will premiere on February 4th, 2022, and its main characters are played by Siiri Solalinna, Sophia Heikkilä, Jani Volanen, and Reino Nord. The film is produced by Silva Mysterium and distributed by Nordisk Film.

  • Remarkable casting

    Director Hanna Bergholm began casting for the role of Tinja in 2018. Casting was challenging because it was a difficult dual role. 1,200 girls from all over Finland were tested for the role. 12-year-old Siiri Solalinna was elected to the role.

  • Impressive evil

    The monster of the film is “presented” in part by an animatronic puppet made by Gustav Hoegen and his team, who has worked e.g. in the films Jurassic World, Clash of the Titans, and Star Wars Saga. As the monster evolves, it is played by three different people. Their special disguise was handled by double Oscar nominee Conor O’Sullivan, known from the Game of Thrones series, as well as X-Men: First Class and Alien.

  • Reception

    The film is represented by Wild Bunch International, one of the world's leading sales companies. The psychological horror film has been enthusiastically received, and the distribution rights have already been sold to the USA, France, and Great Britain. IFC Midnight won the race in Cannes and has purchased the North American rights to the film. The film was chosen as the first Finnish film to be included in the program of the opening weekend of Sundance, one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world.
